Screening and Diagnosis

Frequently underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed, the typical patient with bipolar disorder may endure up to 10 years of affective symptoms before an appropriate diagnosis is made. Studies have shown that bipolar disorder patients are often initially misdiagnosed with unipolar depression because patients are more likely to present for treatment during depression than mania. The use of systematic and validated screening tools can help better identify the patient with bipolar disorder.
